Help secure a defining image of Strawberry Hill House and Garden
Strawberry Hill House is seeking to raise £85,000 to acquire South East View of Strawberry Hill House (c.1755–58) by Johann Heinrich Müntz.
Commissioned by Horace Walpole, this is one of only two known oil paintings of Strawberry Hill and the earliest detailed painted view of the house. It captures the villa at a crucial early stage, before its most dramatic transformation in 1759 — preserving the only contemporary visual record of Walpole’s first Gothic experiment.
The painting is currently on short-term loan and on display in the Red Bedchamber. Securing it permanently will ensure that this vital document of the birth of the Gothic Revival remains publicly accessible at Strawberry Hill.
Matched Funding Opportunity
Two generous supporters have pledged to match donations to this appeal, meaning every gift you make will go twice as far until we reach our target.
Your support will contribute directly towards:
- The acquisition of the painting for Strawberry Hill House
- Keeping this important work in its original architectural context
- Ensuring ongoing public display and access
- Any funds raised above our target will support Strawberry Hill House & Garden’s ongoing work to preserve and share Horace Walpole’s legacy.
We are grateful to Thomas Coulborn & Sons, Fine Art Dealers, whose support for this campaign reflects a shared commitment to keeping works of this importance in public hands.
