Reinstate the Shell Seat to Strawberry Hill
The shell seat was one of the most evocative features of Horace Walpole’s 18th-century garden — a place designed for rest, conversation, and delight within his celebrated “land of beauties”.
Although the original seat no longer survives in its historic form, its presence is well documented in accounts of Walpole’s garden and remains central to the character of Strawberry Hill.
We are working with Factum Arte, internationally renowned for their work in historically informed reconstruction and heritage craftsmanship, to create a new shell seat based on original research, returning this remarkable feature to Strawberry Hill’s garden.
